National Poetry Day

New anthology of poetry celebrates National Poetry Day on 4th October

This year, National Poetry Day (NPD) falls on October 4th and, for the first time, a special anthology has been collated on behalf of the Forward Arts Foundation (the charity that funds NPD). Its focus is this year's theme - change.

The book's format is distinctive: top children's poets have been invited to contribute one of their own poems and also to choose a further poem, typically by a classic poet, which reverberates with the theme of change. There are illuminating commentaries from each poet articulating their choices. It is a collection of many and varied voices: so much packed in to such a slim volume.

You can find out more about the anthology in this blog by Karen Morris, from Edge Hill University. She explores the diversity of poets and variety of forms included in the collection, which can help teachers move beyond traditional fare.

The National Poetry Day website https://nationalpoetryday.co.uk also features a collection of classic change poems that you might like to share and you'll also find poetry recommendations and a series of Poetry for a Change films.

On 4th October at 2pm, there will be a Live Lesson Broadcast, led by award-winning performance poet, author and National Poetry Day ambassador Joseph Coelho and BBC presenter and author Katie Thistleton.  This lesson will feature poetry reading and performance and critical analysis of similes and metaphors.

CLPE, a National Poetry Day partner, have developed specific resources to help you celebrate this day in your school.  https://clpe.org.uk/poetryline holds an extensive bank of teaching sequences, videos of poet performances and interviews and a wealth of resources to support the quality teaching of poetry in the classroom.
